Department of the Juvenile Probation Service and Probation Service for Adults of Kos

INTRODUCTION

Our Service is a supportive regional public service of the Ministry of Justice, based at the Court of First Instance of Kos, with jurisdiction over the Northern Dodecanese region.

The Services were established in their current form in 1976 (Law No. 378/1976), and their operation is regulated by Presidential Decree No. 49/1979. They constitute the main public body responsible for the non-custodial treatment of minors (aged 12–18) who have committed an offence or are at risk of becoming offenders.

The Service has been operating on the island of Kos since 2001 and is a single-person service.

COMPETENCES

The purpose of the Service is the prevention of juvenile delinquency, the support of minors who have come into conflict with the law, as well as the provision of social assistance to adults facing difficult circumstances.

Our work includes:

  • Social Investigations and Social Reports
  • Social investigations are carried out and reports are prepared on the family and social environment of minors, providing judges with the necessary information in order to decide on educational or criminal measures.
  • Supervision and Support of Minors
  • The Service monitors the daily life, behaviour and development of juvenile offenders or minors at risk, providing them with counselling and support.
  • Social Assistance

The Service provides social support to adults who are released from prison, as well as to vulnerable individuals or families requiring guidance for their social reintegration.

The Juvenile Probation Services and Probation Services for Adults are responsible for providing assistance and supervision to adults who have been sentenced to imprisonment with suspension of the execution of their sentence under supervision, whose sentence has been converted into an obligation to perform community service, or who have been conditionally released. They also conduct social investigations concerning persons held in temporary detention or persons subject to restrictive conditions imposed by a court decision or by an order of the public prosecutor responsible for sentence enforcement.

The Juvenile Probation Services operate within a wider network of cooperation with various institutions and organisations. More specifically, we cooperate with:

  • Schools and local offices of Primary and Secondary Education.
  • Local Government authorities (Municipalities) and local organisations.
  • Various Public Organisations and Non-Governmental Organisations, depending on the needs of the minor and their family.
