Department of the Juvenile Probation Service and Probation Service for Adults of Volos
The Department of the Juvenile Probation Service and Probation Service for Adults of Volos is a regional judicial service of the Ministry of Justice. It is housed in the Volos Judicial Court Building and operates under the supervision of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Court of First Instance.
The Volos Judicial Court Building occupies an entire city block, situated between Iolkou Street, A. Gazi Street, Koutarelia Street, and Gallias Street. It is a two-storey stone-built structure, the construction of which began at the beginning of the 20th century, funded by the Andreas Syngros bequest, and was completed during the 1920s.
In its original form, the building featured rich decorative elements, including marble architectural details, many of which were destroyed by the earthquakes of 1955. In 1974, two extensions were added to the rear side of the building, reaching the same height as the original structure, in order to meet the increased functional needs of the courts. However, these additions altered, to some extent, the original architectural composition.
By a final decision, the Ministry of Culture designated the Volos Judicial Court Building, together with its surrounding area within the boundaries of its property, as a “historic preserved monument”, as it constitutes a significant and representative example of a public building from the interwar period and is important for the study of the history of architecture in the region.
The Department of the Juvenile Probation Service and Probation Service for Adults of Volos falls under the 2nd Directorate of Juvenile Probation and Social Assistance Services of Thessaloniki.
Its responsibilities include:
a) The provision of non-custodial measures for minors who have committed a criminal offence or are at risk of becoming offenders or victims of criminal acts, as well as the support of the juvenile criminal justice system, both in terms of preventing juvenile delinquency and victimisation and in terms of the treatment and management of juvenile offenders.
b) Providing assistance and supervision to persons who have been sentenced to imprisonment with suspension of the execution of their sentence under supervision, to persons whose sentence has been converted into an obligation to perform community service, or to persons who have been conditionally released.
The Service also conducts social inquiries concerning persons held in temporary detention or persons subject to restrictive conditions, and supervises individuals who have been conditionally released, those sentenced to imprisonment with suspension of execution under supervision, and those whose sentence has been converted into an obligation to perform community service.
