Court of First Instance of Volos

The Volos Judicial Court Building occupies an entire city block, enclosed by Iolkou Street (Eleftheriou Venizelou Street), A. Gazi Street, Koutarelia Street and G. Kartali Street.

It is a two-storey stone-built building, the construction of which began at the beginning of the 20th century, funded by the Syngros bequest, and was completed during the 1920s. In its original form, it featured rich decoration, including marble and carved decorative elements, many of which were destroyed by the 1955 earthquakes that affected the wider area of Volos, as well as by the subsequent restoration works.

In 1974, two extensions were added to the rear side of the building, with the same height as the original structure, in order to meet the increased functional needs of the courts. However, these additions partially altered the original architectural character of the building.

The existing building of the Volos Judicial Court Building has a total surface area of 1,348.21 sq.m. By Decision No. 2258/44523/27.8.1998 of the Minister of Culture, it was designated as a “historical listed monument together with its surrounding area within the boundaries of its property”, as it constitutes a significant and representative example of a public building from the interwar period, important for the study of the history of architecture in the region.

It also serves as a landmark for the residents of the city, being connected with historical memories.
